Filled with greatness, Psalm One calls us upwards to live in such a way that we become like the person it describes. And thereby succeed in all we do. But distracted by our obligations, and pressures, we sometimes forget to stay planted by the stream of God’s living water.
Doctors sometimes request their patients, particularly older patients, to undergo cognitive exams. Or a patient, concerned about their own memory, may even request to take them. Inability to remember facts or solve problems could indicate memory loss or dementia.
I have a problem with her (I must confess). That virtuous woman in Proverbs 31. She did all things well and never did anything wrong. I’m sure she coined the term busy as a bee, and made coffee breaks and take-out pizza tabu. Considered it sinful to sleep once the sun was up. Never a hair out of place. And sure she never gossiped or was unkind. And certainly never yelled at her kids!
As a young man, missionary Charles Thomas Studd (1860-1931) had everything going for him. A famous cricket champion during his Eton and Cambridge days, fame and success were his. But after his older brother George died, he started questioning it all. “What is all the fame and flattery worth,” he wondered, “when a man comes to face eternity?”
No one likes roadblocks or delays. We prefer doing what we want and going where we wish. But sometimes we find roadblocks in our way, and frustration sets in. Or irritation, anger, resignation, sorrow. Disappointment can bring a whole spectrum of emotions. And we wish for a bulldozer to clear the way.
